Alun Griffiths Contractors has returned to profit a year after founder Alun Griffiths bought back the business and reset its operations.
The civil engineering contractor reported an operating profit of £7.2m in 2025, compared with a £38m loss the previous year. Pre-tax profit recovered to £3.9m from a £44m loss, while turnover fell by nearly a third to £140m as the company deliberately reduced activity to rebuild margins.
The turnaround followed the May 2025 acquisition of the business from CRH by Grosmont Ventures, controlled by the Abergavenny-based contractor’s founder. The company received £216m of financial support through debt waivers and non-repayable support arrangements, moving from net liabilities of £218m to net assets of £2.3m. Headcount was reduced from 731 to 570 as the business refocused on lower-risk work.
