Manchester United advances stadium land plan

Manchester United has advanced plans for replacing Old Trafford stadium. The club has secured most of the land needed for a proposed 100,000-seat venue.

IN Brief:

  • Manchester United has secured most of the land required for a proposed 100,000-seat stadium near Old Trafford.
  • The new ground would sit close to the existing stadium, allowing matches to continue during construction.
  • The Foster + Partners concept forms part of a wider regeneration plan for the Old Trafford area.

Manchester United has secured the majority of the land needed to build a proposed 100,000-capacity stadium near Old Trafford, moving the project into a more concrete delivery phase.

The club has acquired a 25-acre triangle of land between Wharfside Way, Europa Way, and John Gilbert Way, immediately behind the Stretford End. The new ground would sit around 350m from the existing stadium, allowing the team to keep playing at Old Trafford while construction takes place.

Designed by Foster + Partners, the proposed stadium includes a large umbrella-style roof intended to harvest solar energy and rainwater. The project is expected to cost around £2bn and take five years to build, forming the centrepiece of a wider regeneration programme for the Old Trafford area.
