IN Brief:
- LA Metro will open Section 1 of the D Line extension on 8 May.
- The 3.92-mile section adds three new underground stations along the Wilshire corridor.
- Later phases are forecast for 2027, extending the line further into Beverly Hills and West LA.
LA Metro has confirmed that Section 1 of the D Line subway extension will open on 8 May, bringing a new 3.92-mile stretch of rail service into operation along one of Los Angeles’ busiest corridors.
The first section extends the line west from Wilshire/Western to Wilshire/La Cienega, with new stations at Wilshire/La Brea, Wilshire/Fairfax and Wilshire/La Cienega. Metro said the new stations will be fully ADA-accessible and include elevators, escalators, bike parking, wider platforms and integrated public art.
The opening marks the first phase of a wider rail build that is due to continue with Section 2 in spring 2027 and Section 3 in fall 2027. Metro said travel times from Union Station to the new stations are expected to be about 14 minutes to Wilshire/La Brea, 17 minutes to Wilshire/Fairfax and 21 minutes to Wilshire/La Cienega, subject to final testing and certification.
The D Line extension is one of the agency’s priority projects and forms part of its wider transport delivery programme ahead of the 2026 World Cup and the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. For the project market, it is a visible handover milestone on a major urban tunnelling and station-build scheme that has been years in delivery.
