Patrick Guest takes executive chair role at TDUK

Patrick Guest has formally become Timber Development UK’s executive chair. The appointment strengthens commercial experience across its industry leadership.

Timber Development UK has appointed Patrick Guest as executive chair, adding senior distribution and manufacturing experience to its leadership as the organisation develops its role across the timber construction supply chain.

Guest took up the position on 1 July following board approval in June, succeeding Chris Sutton, who had chaired TDUK since its formation through the merger of the Timber Trade Federation and TRADA.

Sutton will continue to support the organisation as an ambassador. His tenure covered the integration of trade representation, technical guidance, research, training, and design resources within one supply-chain body.

Having held senior roles with Arnold Laver, National Timber Group, and Saint-Gobain, Guest brings experience of merchanting, product distribution, business integration, and the commercial relationship between manufacturers, importers, distributors, and construction customers.

The executive-chair structure combines board governance with more direct support for TDUK’s chief executive and senior team. It gives the organisation additional leadership capacity across technical standards, market development, competency, carbon reporting, and member services.

Three new directors have also joined the board, broadening representation across manufacturing, engineered timber, and product distribution. Simon Woods represents West Fraser UK, Greg Cooper brings structural timber experience from Hybrid Structures, and Greg Pickett joins from Taylor Maxwell.

TDUK’s membership spans forestry products, importing, manufacturing, treatment, merchanting, design, engineering, fabrication, and construction. Bringing those interests together requires common positions on standards and market development while recognising that each part of the chain carries different risks and commercial pressures.

The leadership change arrives during a difficult period for material suppliers as weak housing starts and delayed commercial projects affect timber volumes. High financing costs and cautious contractor procurement have also slowed the conversion of approved developments into product orders.

At the same time, timber is receiving greater attention within low-carbon construction strategies. Structural timber, engineered wood products, timber-frame housing, facade systems, windows, doors, and internal products can reduce reliance on more carbon-intensive materials when specified and used appropriately.

Expansion depends on evidence and capability

Wider timber adoption increasingly depends on verified performance rather than material preference alone. Designers and clients require dependable information on structure, fire, acoustics, moisture, durability, sourcing, carbon, maintenance, and end-of-life treatment.

Those requirements place TDUK between groups with different priorities. Manufacturers need practical routes to market, engineers require robust technical data, contractors need buildable details, and insurers and warranty providers seek evidence that systems will perform throughout their service life.

Moisture management remains particularly important because prolonged wetting during storage or construction can create defects that are difficult to resolve after membranes, linings, and finishes have been installed.

Design responsibility also needs to remain clear across connections, temporary stability, penetrations, fire stopping, interfaces, and procurement changes. Off-site manufacture can improve quality and reduce site labour, but it depends on earlier design decisions and tighter dimensional coordination.

Traceability is becoming more prominent in refurbishment as well as new construction, with specialist timber-window manufacturers investing in documented origin and controlled production for heritage and conservation projects.

TDUK must also navigate the distinction between biogenic carbon stored in timber and the full lifecycle impact of a building system. Transport, processing, adhesives, treatments, replacement cycles, and eventual disposal affect the final calculation, while assumptions around long-term carbon storage need to remain transparent.

Supply resilience presents another challenge because the UK imports a substantial share of the construction timber it consumes. Exchange rates, shipping, European production, forestry conditions, and competing demand can all influence price and availability.

Domestic manufacturing can add value and shorten parts of the supply chain, although it cannot immediately replace the range or volume of imported products. Market expansion therefore depends on reliable international sourcing alongside investment in UK processing and fabrication.

Skills requirements extend beyond carpentry to structural engineering, moisture design, fire detailing, system installation, quality inspection, and maintenance. More extensive use of timber will require those capabilities to develop together rather than concentrating solely on production capacity.

An industry body can support common guidance, training, and technical evidence, but it cannot correct project-level failures caused by fragmented responsibility or late design change. Its influence rests on whether information is adopted in procurement documents, design coordination, site planning, and quality-control processes.

Guest’s commercial background adds experience of the point at which technical ambition meets availability, price, logistics, and customer demand. The expanded board gives TDUK broader representation as timber’s growth prospects become increasingly tied to consistent delivery and documented performance.
