HS2 moves A43 traffic onto new bridge

HS2 has moved A43 traffic onto its new bridge deck. Excavation for the railway cutting can now proceed beneath the live road near Brackley.

HS2 Ltd has moved both carriageways of the A43 onto a new bridge near Brackley, allowing excavation of the railway cutting beneath the road to begin.

The northbound carriageway was closed and realigned over the weekend of 11–12 July, followed by the southbound side on 18–19 July. Traffic returned to both directions on the completed structure after the second closure.

Connecting Oxford, Brackley, and Northampton, the A43 also provides links between the M40 and M1 and access to Silverstone. The closure programme was arranged to avoid the British Grand Prix and to keep one direction available during each phase of the realignment.

Preparatory work began in 2023 when the road was shifted to create an island between its carriageways. That temporary alignment gave construction teams sufficient space to build the bridge at ground level before moving the highway onto it.

The structure is supported by piled foundations extending to a depth of 52 metres. Pile caps and piers carry a 66-metre bridge deck, with seven large steel beams supporting the concrete road structure.

With traffic now passing above, teams can remove the ground below the bridge and form the cutting that will carry the railway. The top-down construction method reduces the period for which the A43 needs to remain closed and separates much of the excavation from live highway traffic.

The bridge sits within the 50-mile section of HS2 being delivered by EKFB, the joint venture formed by Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial Construction, and BAM Nuttall. ASC, comprising Arcadis, Setec, and COWI, provides design support.

National Highways and Kier Transportation have also been involved, including construction of the temporary road alignment used to maintain traffic during the main bridge works.

The A43 operation follows the reopening of several smaller roads and bridges across Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire. Six local routes returned to traffic during the preceding six months as construction moved through structures, earthworks, and reinstatement.

Managing a major highway above an active rail excavation creates a long sequence of temporary and permanent load cases. The bridge must perform as a finished road structure while the surrounding ground conditions change substantially beneath and beside it.

Instrumentation and monitoring will remain important throughout excavation. Movement in piles, piers, the deck, retained ground, temporary slopes, and nearby highway surfaces must be tracked against defined limits so that the removal sequence can be adjusted before small changes develop into operational problems.

Drainage will need to function through every phase. The road deck, temporary works, exposed cutting, and final railway alignment create different water paths, while heavy rainfall can affect earthworks stability and construction access even where the permanent bridge remains unaffected.

Traffic management has been one of the project’s most visible risks. Weekend closures allow intensive work over a short period, but they demand detailed contingency planning because plant failure, delayed surfacing, poor weather, testing issues, or an incomplete safety inspection can extend disruption onto a weekday network with limited alternative capacity.

The successful realignment does not complete the structure’s railway function. Excavation, drainage, formation, retaining works, and the future track system must still pass beneath the live A43 while highway inspections and maintenance continue above.

Top-down bridge construction forms part of a wider effort to industrialise repeated infrastructure elements and reduce disruption. Completion of the precast structure at Chipping Warden Green Tunnel used repeatable components and closely sequenced assembly to move work away from open-ended onsite construction.

Standardisation has clear benefits, although ground conditions, traffic, logistics, local interfaces, and previous quality issues still require location-specific engineering. Repetition can improve output without removing the need for verification, inspection, and control.

Temporary works will continue to carry a substantial share of the risk. Retaining structures, access roads, excavation support, dewatering arrangements, and haul routes must function safely while the permanent asset develops around them.

Spoil movement will also become more prominent as excavation progresses below the A43. Haulage routes, stockpiling, material classification, reuse, dust control, and weather resilience can influence production rates as much as the excavation plant itself.

HS2’s wider programme remains under a delivery reset, placing greater emphasis on realistic schedules, cost control, and completion of assets already under construction. Milestones such as the A43 realignment unlock subsequent earthworks and railway installation, although their full value depends on the productivity of the phases that follow.

The next stage near Brackley will move below road level. Excavation can now proceed with the bridge carrying normal traffic, turning the completed highway structure into the access point for another substantial section of railway construction.
