Holcim supplies lower-carbon concrete in Digbeth

Holcim UK will supply lower-carbon concrete to Birmingham’s Smithfield Lofts. The ECOPact mixes cut project carbon against the original CEM I baseline.

Holcim UK has won a competitive tender to supply sustainable ready-mix concrete to Smithfield Lofts in Digbeth, Birmingham.

The residential scheme, managed by principal contractor Prosperity Wealth, forms part of the wider £1.9bn Smithfield regeneration programme. Lendlease is managing the masterplan site through a joint venture with Birmingham City Council, on land formerly occupied by Birmingham Wholesale Market.

Holcim delivered a 160-cubic-metre concrete pour in November 2025 for foundations to the crane platform and columns up to the first floor. After Velcol Groundworks and structural engineer O’Connor Sutton Cronin reviewed the original concrete specification, Holcim proposed ECOPact low-carbon mixes, including a watertight mix to prevent water ingress. Against the original CEM I baseline, the company says the mixes saved 429,093kg CO2e, equivalent to 429 tonnes CO2e.
