HOCHTIEF has agreed to acquire German transmission-line specialist Autmatec, adding construction, refurbishment, and maintenance capability as investment in the country’s electricity network expands.

Walldorf-based Autmatec employs around 80 specialists and generated approximately €50 million of revenue in 2026. The business works for transmission and distribution network operators across Germany, covering site preparation, foundations, tower construction, overhead-line installation, refurbishment, maintenance, and project management.

The transaction remains subject to merger-control clearance from the German Federal Cartel Office. Autmatec’s existing leadership team is expected to continue running the company, giving HOCHTIEF a specialist operating business rather than simply acquiring equipment or an order book.

For a major infrastructure contractor, the workforce and technical approvals are among the more relevant parts of the transaction. Overhead-line construction requires crews familiar with tower erection, conductor installation, live-network interfaces, access constraints, and the safety systems used by electricity network operators. Those skills cannot be added quickly when a project has already reached procurement.

Autmatec’s service range also overlaps with work HOCHTIEF already performs in engineering and civil construction. Foundations and access works sit naturally within a large contractor’s existing capability, while tower assembly, conductor installation, and specialist line maintenance extend the group further into the transmission package.

The combined offer could reduce some of the interfaces created when civil engineering and line installation are procured separately. A tower foundation has to be completed accurately and released before steel erection, while access routes and working areas need to support heavy components and specialist lifting equipment. Line-stringing operations then introduce additional requirements around temporary works, neighbouring infrastructure, crossings, and outages.

Integrating those activities under a larger delivery organisation does not remove specialist subcontracting, but it gives HOCHTIEF direct control over another part of the construction sequence. The practical value will depend on how Autmatec is incorporated without losing the specialist management, customer relationships, and operating flexibility that made the business attractive in the first place.

Germany’s network-development programme provides the market context for that move. In its latest assessment of the electricity network development plan for 2037 and 2045, the Bundesnetzagentur considered 118 of 159 proposed transmission expansion measures provisionally eligible for confirmation. Seventy-six of those measures are already included in the existing Federal Requirements Plan Act or its current revision.

The regulator has also said further expansion of the extra-high-voltage network remains necessary as electricity demand changes and more renewable generation is connected. The current planning process includes further high-voltage direct-current infrastructure, interconnectors, and additional offshore transmission links alongside reinforcement of the onshore system.

Those plans do not translate immediately into construction contracts. Individual measures still need to progress through network planning, statutory approvals, design, land access, procurement, and delivery, and not every proposal will ultimately be built in its current form. They nevertheless point towards a sustained requirement for transmission engineering and site capability rather than a short-term surge around one project.

That distinction is important for specialist contractors. Electricity network construction tends to require experienced crews over long periods, while the timing of individual schemes can be affected by planning decisions, permitting, equipment procurement, outages, and land agreements. A larger project portfolio can help spread those resources between schemes when one programme moves more slowly than expected.

HOCHTIEF says its German order book has doubled over the past four years and is also positioning itself for work arising from the federal government’s €500 billion infrastructure investment programme. Autmatec provides a relatively narrow but technically useful extension to that strategy because transmission lines combine recurring civil works with a specialist installation discipline.

The acquisition also reflects the wider construction industry’s increasing interest in controlling scarce specialist capability. Capital availability alone does not build power networks: clients need contractors with approved people, suitable equipment, engineering procedures, quality systems, and experience working around operational electricity infrastructure.

Autmatec’s approximately 80 employees represent a small workforce within the wider HOCHTIEF group, but their concentration in overhead transmission work gives them a more specific value than the number suggests. Recruitment can expand a general construction workforce; reproducing established transmission certifications, project references, and client relationships takes considerably longer.

Financial terms of the transaction have not been disclosed, so the purchase cannot yet be assessed against Autmatec’s stated €50 million revenue or future order prospects. The immediate rationale rests on technical capacity and market access rather than a published valuation.

German Federal Cartel Office clearance is therefore the next formal step. If completed, the deal will give HOCHTIEF an established overhead-line delivery business at a point when Germany is planning further extra-high-voltage expansion, shifting part of the group’s growth strategy from bidding for future grid work towards owning more of the specialist construction capability needed to deliver it.
