Lincolnshire County Council has begun the third and final push of the Grantham Southern Relief Road bridge, with contractors moving the 293-metre structure across the East Coast Main Line and River Witham towards its permanent position.
The bridge weighs approximately 2,500 tonnes and is 16 metres wide. This final phase is being carried out over seven planned weekend possessions of the railway because the structure is now passing above the East Coast Main Line, where work has to stop normal train movements while the push is under way.
The scheduled possessions run on Sundays from 30 August to 11 October, with additional contingency dates reserved for 18 October, 25 October, and 1 November. During each operation, the bridge advances only a few millimetres per minute so that survey and engineering teams can maintain its alignment across the river, railway, and temporary supports.
Briton Fabricators in Hucknall manufactured the bridge steelwork. The structure uses a composite steel and reinforced-concrete deck, while weathering steel has been specified for the main beams and piers to reduce long-term maintenance requirements.
The push does not complete the bridge. Once the structure has reached its permanent bearings, contractors still have to install remaining steelwork, construct the bridge deck, fit safety barriers, lay the road surface, and complete the embankments connecting it to the new highway.
That makes the current operation a programme release point for the wider scheme. Several finishing activities cannot progress efficiently while the bridge remains supported in its launch configuration, so moving the main structure into place allows the project team to replace temporary launch arrangements with conventional bridge and highway completion work.
The operation follows two earlier pushes, the first carried out in March 2026 and the second in June. Each stage progressively moved the structure from the western side of the site towards its final supports, with the latest phase covering the most restricted interface because it crosses one of the country’s busiest railway lines.
The East Coast Main Line dictates both the timing and pace of the work. A bridge of this size cannot simply be moved continuously above an operational railway, and possession periods have to leave enough time for jacking, controlled movement, survey checks, temporary support work, and confirmation that the railway can be safely returned to service.
That creates a different risk profile from ordinary bridge erection. The structure is already substantially assembled, but progress depends on precision over distance rather than the speed at which individual steel sections can be installed. Small deviations during a 293-metre launch can become significant by the time the bridge reaches its permanent bearings, which is why the movement is measured in millimetres per minute.
The launch method has already required substantial redesign. Lincolnshire County Council’s project chronology records that a design error relating to the bridge rollout was identified in February 2025, delaying the crossing programme while the installation method was revised. The first push eventually followed in March 2026.
Most of the wider relief road had already advanced while the bridge remained the principal unresolved engineering element. The complete Grantham Southern Relief Road will extend for 3.5km and is intended to provide a route around the town, reducing congestion and journey delays while opening access to development land.
Its usefulness depends on the bridge closing the gap across the River Witham and the railway. Large sections of road and associated works can be complete, but the scheme cannot function as a continuous highway until the crossing and its approaches are finished, surfaced, protected, and tied into the remaining alignment.
The planned seven-weekend sequence reflects that importance. Losing a possession to weather or another operational problem does not merely delay a single lift; it can move subsequent bridge activities and highway completion work because the permanent deck, barriers, road surface, and eastern approach all depend on the launch reaching its final position.
Contingency weekends provide some protection against that risk, while the slow movement gives engineers time to confirm alignment during each possession. The project is currently expected to open in 2028, leaving further structural and highway work after the final push rather than treating the crossing itself as practical completion.
For now, the engineering task is unusually narrow: move approximately 2,500 tonnes of steel and concrete across an operational rail corridor without allowing a structure nearly 300 metres long to drift from its required line. Once that operation is complete, the Grantham scheme can return to the less theatrical, but equally necessary, work of deck construction, surfacing, barriers, embankments, and final road completion.
