Conquip Engineering Group has opened a permanent base in Livingston, establishing its eighth UK operating location and bringing equipment, transport, and engineering support closer to construction projects across Scotland.

The company supplies contractors working in groundworks, civil engineering, utilities, infrastructure, and the wider built environment. Its product range covers excavation support, lifting, concrete handling, plant attachments, site-management equipment, and other temporary systems used during construction.

Conquip has supported Scottish projects from its existing UK network for several years, but the Livingston opening creates a local stock and service point rather than relying solely on equipment moving from depots further south.

The company’s current location directory now lists Livingston as open, alongside seven other regional UK locations. Conquip says the wider network supports equipment hire and purchase, engineering, in-house transport, servicing, and aftercare.

Regional availability can be particularly important for temporary works and excavation equipment because requirements often change after construction starts. Ground conditions, groundwater, utility locations, programme changes, or revised excavation geometry can alter the support system needed on site with relatively little warning.

Reducing the distance between stock and the workface can therefore affect more than transport cost. A delayed trench box, hydraulic brace, lifting attachment, or replacement unit can hold up an excavation or restrict the number of work areas available to a civil engineering team.

The Livingston operation is being supported by a dedicated local team and Scotland area manager Jasper James. Conquip says stock levels have been established to cover both planned work and shorter-notice requirements, with a HIAB-equipped vehicle available for direct site deliveries.

The company also provides engineering support for deep excavations and temporary works. Its Scottish offer includes project sequencing and methodology reviews, piled-wall and geotechnical analysis, Category 3 checks, temporary propping, hydraulic braces, walers, and box systems.

Those services place the business beyond a straightforward equipment-hire model. Excavation support needs to be selected against depth, ground properties, surcharge loading, groundwater, adjacent structures, access, and the proposed construction sequence rather than simply the dimensions of the excavation.

A standard product may be suitable for one site and inappropriate for another with the same nominal trench width. Temporary works designers need to account for installation, loading, inspection, modification, and removal as part of the construction method, particularly where deep excavations or adjacent assets reduce the available tolerance for movement.

Utilities work can place additional pressure on response times. Emergency repairs may require a safe excavation to be established before the full condition of the buried asset is known, while planned utility projects can involve repeated excavations across long programmes and several ground conditions.

Conquip says it can support emergency utility work with a 24-hour design turnaround for some requirements, alongside national hire capability. The Livingston base gives that service a closer equipment source for Scottish projects, although engineering approval remains distinct from the physical availability of the kit.

The company also provides BIM and Revit information through its technical library. Accurate equipment geometry can help temporary works engineers and site teams test clearances, access, lifting zones, and clashes before systems are delivered.

Digital information is useful where support equipment has to fit around permanent structures, utilities, haul routes, and construction plant, but it does not replace site inspection or competent temporary works management. Actual ground and site conditions remain the basis on which the installation has to be checked.

The Livingston opening also gives Conquip a closer base for pre-construction work on larger Scottish infrastructure bids. Temporary works input during tender and design can influence excavation sizes, programme, plant selection, access, permanent works sequencing, and the amount of construction that can proceed concurrently.

That can reduce later redesign where temporary systems are otherwise considered only after the permanent layout has been fixed. On constrained civil engineering sites, space required for propping, installation plant, lifting, and safe access can alter the most efficient method of constructing the permanent asset.

Conquip has not disclosed an investment value or employment figure for the Livingston operation. Its significance is operational rather than financial: the company has converted an existing Scottish project base into a permanent regional location with stock, engineering, and transport capability.

The measure of the expansion will be how effectively that capacity is used. For contractors, the practical benefit will be whether the Livingston operation reduces equipment lead times and gives temporary works teams quicker access to both the physical systems and engineering support required when site conditions change.
