Autodesk expands Forma across AEC project delivery

Autodesk is extending Forma across more construction and design workflows. Civil 3D connectivity, bidding, field tools, and AI features broaden the cloud platform’s role.

Autodesk is extending its Forma industry cloud across a wider part of the architecture, engineering, and construction lifecycle, connecting civil design, preconstruction, coordination, and site workflows more closely around shared project data.

The September update makes Civil 3D the next Forma Connected Client, alongside deeper connections with Revit, and introduces or previews a series of tools spanning street design, geolocation, bidding, drawing review, field reporting, and AI-assisted project management. Autodesk’s stated direction is to reduce the need for teams to rebuild project context as information passes between disciplines and phases.

Civil 3D connectivity is one of the more consequential additions for infrastructure and site development. Autodesk says planners and building designers will be able to use Civil 3D data as a starting point inside Forma, while civil engineers continue detailed work in Civil 3D. Reference-based interoperability with Forma and Revit is intended to preserve project context between early planning, building design, and detailed civil engineering.

A unified geolocation engine across Forma, Revit, and Civil 3D is also intended to reduce manual coordinate transformations and model misalignment. For multidisciplinary construction projects, location errors between civil, structural, architectural, and site datasets can create disproportionately expensive problems because a small digital discrepancy can become a physical clash once setting-out and excavation begin.

Autodesk is extending the same approach into early transport and public-realm design with Forma Street Design. The planned workflow lets users test lane configurations and intersections, work in synchronised plan and section views, and assess vehicle turning movements before carrying the design into Civil 3D for detailed engineering. A beta is planned, with Autodesk currently taking expressions of interest.

Subsurface and geospatial context are also being brought closer to the shared environment through integrations with Fugro GeoDin, Fugro GroundIQ, and Esri ArcGIS. The aim is to expose more information about terrain and ground conditions earlier, when project teams still have room to change layouts without the cost associated with late redesign.

On the construction side, Forma Bid brings BuildingConnected bidding workflows into the cloud environment. The beta allows contractors to manage invitations, level bids, compare pricing with estimates, and identify possible scope gaps. Autodesk says it is available to customers with Forma for Preconstruction or BuildingConnected Pro subscriptions.

Model-based coordination is also being expanded so that models, sheets, point clouds, geospatial data, and other project information can be viewed together by a broader group of users. The underlying proposition is familiar but difficult to execute: keep technical information connected to the decisions and approvals made around it instead of allowing separate copies and disconnected files to proliferate through a project.

Forma Build adds AI-powered Project Home insights intended to surface items requiring attention and provide context before users act. Workflow Studio allows teams to define processes such as quality-inspection review routes with human approval steps, while a mobile Daily Log Agent can convert a superintendent’s spoken update into a structured daily record.

That last feature addresses a mundane but persistent site-management burden. Daily logs are valuable because they capture labour, progress, weather, incidents, deliveries, and constraints close to the time they occur, yet they are often completed after the shift when details have to be reconstructed. Voice-to-structured-entry tools may reduce that administrative gap, provided project teams retain control over accuracy and approval.

Autodesk is making similar moves earlier in the design process. In Forma Site Design, Autodesk Assistant is planned to answer natural-language questions about a site, while Building Layout Explorer can generate and compare multifamily layouts against a client’s unit mix. Revit is gaining AI-assisted room, annotation, and documentation workflows, with users reviewing and accepting the generated output.

The company is explicit that Forma is intended to take on more work currently carried out in Revit over time, while Revit itself continues to be developed and more tightly connected to the cloud platform. That transition is likely to matter to contractors and consultants because Revit remains embedded in established BIM delivery processes, company standards, training, and project information requirements.

Migration will matter as much as functionality. A connected cloud can remove repeated exports and handoffs only if clients, designers, contractors, and supply-chain teams can work with the same information structures without losing the detailed controls they depend on. Autodesk is using Connected Clients to bridge that gap rather than forcing an immediate replacement of desktop workflows.

The breadth of the September update matters more than any individual AI feature. Bidding, model coordination, field logs, approval workflows, geospatial context, and detailed design all produce information that can affect cost and programme. Keeping those datasets connected could reduce duplicated entry and make changes easier to trace, but interoperability still has to hold up across live projects involving multiple companies, permissions, and contractual responsibilities.

Autodesk’s current roadmap positions Forma as the organising layer for that effort. Civil 3D connectivity, Forma Bid, and field tools extend the platform beyond early design, while AI is being inserted into specific tasks rather than presented as a separate construction product. The value of the platform will depend on how reliably information survives the handoffs between planning, design, procurement, construction, and operation.
