Aegis starts Sheffield commercial fleet energy hub

Construction has started on Aegis Energy’s first Sheffield fleet hub. The Smithywood facility will combine high-power EV charging, HVO refuelling, commercial-vehicle bays, parking, and driver facilities ahead of a spring 2027 opening.

Aegis Energy has started construction of a commercial vehicle energy hub at Smithywood Business Park in Sheffield, moving the first of its planned UK fleet sites into physical delivery. The development, close to junction 35 of the M1, is being designed around vans and trucks rather than adapting passenger-car charging infrastructure to larger commercial vehicles.

The completed site is planned with 72 van bays and 30 truck bays, alongside electric vehicle charging at up to 400kW through CCS2 connectors. Hydrotreated vegetable oil refuelling will provide an additional option for fleets still operating compression-ignition vehicles, while secure parking, showers, toilets, food provision, and driver rest areas are also included.

The hub is scheduled to open in spring 2027 on a former colliery site at Smithywood. Its proximity to the motorway places the development beside an established freight corridor, reducing the need for commercial vehicles to divert into urban charging locations where access, turning space, and dwell times may be less suitable for heavy fleet use.

Aegis expects the site to accommodate more than 100 commercial vehicles a day as operations develop. Charging will be available through booked slots as well as drive-up use, allowing operators to combine vehicle downtime with statutory breaks, overnight stops, or planned route schedules rather than treating energy replenishment as a separate journey.

The construction requirement extends beyond installing a bank of charge points beside an existing forecourt. High-power commercial charging brings substantial electrical demand, larger vehicle turning envelopes, heavier pavement requirements, longer parking bays, and more complex traffic management than a typical passenger-car installation. The Sheffield project must also integrate HVO infrastructure while maintaining safe movement between trucks, vans, pedestrians, charging equipment, and driver facilities.

Electrical capacity will become more important if heavy-vehicle charging moves beyond current CCS2 power levels. Aegis has said its hubs are being prepared for the Megawatt Charging System as that technology becomes commercially available, allowing future equipment to be incorporated without redesigning the whole site around larger vehicles and higher electrical loads.

Providing for that expansion during construction can influence ducting, substations, switchgear, grid capacity, drainage, protective barriers, and the geometry of charging bays. Retrofitting those elements after a hub is operational would be considerably more disruptive, particularly where heavy vehicles need to remain able to enter, charge, park, and leave throughout the works.

Sheffield is also intended to establish a repeatable format for later Aegis developments. Sites are being progressed at locations including Dartford, Warrington, Immingham, and Corby as part of a wider plan for commercial vehicle hubs on motorway, port, logistics, and freight corridors. Each location will still face its own planning, grid, civil engineering, and commissioning constraints, so repeatability will depend on how much of the Sheffield design can be standardised without ignoring local conditions.

The multi-energy layout reflects the uneven pace at which commercial transport can electrify. Vans operating predictable regional routes can increasingly work around depot or public charging, while heavier long-distance vehicles face more difficult questions around range, payload, charging time, and the availability of sufficiently powerful infrastructure. Retaining HVO at the Sheffield site allows the hub to serve a mixed fleet during that transition.

Once operational, reliability will matter as much as installed charging power. A commercial hub must manage simultaneous demand, booking systems, equipment faults, maintenance access, and peaks created by common shift or driving patterns. Poor circulation or insufficient waiting space can reduce the practical throughput of a high-powered installation even where the electrical equipment performs as specified.

The construction programme therefore has to coordinate civil works, building services, charging equipment, fuel infrastructure, security, driver facilities, and digital systems before the planned spring 2027 opening. The completed Sheffield hub will then provide the first operating evidence of whether Aegis Energy’s proposed format can be repeated across a larger national network without compromising the access and utilisation requirements of commercial fleets.
