Bristol completes three New Cut infrastructure schemes

Bristol has completed three major bridge and river-wall repair schemes. Bathurst Bridge reopened six months early, alongside two completed river-wall stabilisation projects.

Bristol City Council has completed three bridge and river-wall projects around the New Cut, reopening key routes after a programme of restoration, stabilisation and emergency repair. Bathurst Bridge is back in service following a £1.9m refurbishment, while separate works at Cumberland Road and York Road have strengthened vulnerable sections of river wall.

The 120-year-old Bathurst Bridge underwent a 16-month programme that finished around six months ahead of schedule. Built in 1905, the structure carries road traffic and pedestrians between Wapping Road, Cumberland Road and Commercial Road in Bristol’s harbourside area.

Work included grit blasting to remove old paint and corrosion, structural repairs, repainting and weatherproofing. The road surface received a high-friction finish and new lightweight decking panels were installed on the footpath. The project is the sixth completed element in Bristol’s £18.6m programme to restore nine bridges crossing the New Cut of the River Avon.

Completion of the bridge coincides with the end of the Gateway river-wall stabilisation project beside Cumberland Road near Gaol Ferry Bridge. The £1.7m package repaired two sections of wall using concrete and rock foundations laid on the riverbed, followed by anchoring and reinforcement of the existing wall and installation of protective wrap mesh.

The Gateway scheme finished two months ahead of programme and £1.5m below its original budget. Bristol City Council has attributed that result to the stabilisation method selected for the existing structure, avoiding a more extensive reconstruction programme while securing the wall against further deterioration.

River-wall work carries uncertainties that are less visible on conventional above-ground construction. Access is constrained by water, existing highways and nearby structures, while the full condition of historic masonry and foundations may only become apparent once work is under way. Temporary works and construction sequencing therefore have a substantial influence on cost and programme.

York Road has also returned to two-way traffic following permanent stabilisation work next to Langton Street Bridge, commonly known as Banana Bridge. Emergency repairs began in July 2024 after movement was identified in the river wall, followed by longer-term works from December 2024.

The completed package included installation of sheet piles to strengthen the road and river wall, reconstruction of sections of riverbank, new trees and vegetation and resurfacing of the highway. York Road reopened fully on 8 September, restoring another transport route affected by the condition of the New Cut’s ageing infrastructure.

The three completed schemes sit within a wider maintenance challenge along Bristol’s historic waterside network. Bridges, retaining walls, highways, utilities and public routes occupy the same restricted corridor, so structural deterioration can quickly affect more than the individual asset where a defect first appears.

Bristol City Council is funding a £12m programme to stabilise New Cut river walls. The separate bridge-restoration programme is supported by the UK government’s City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement, secured through the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority, together with £2m from Bristol Clean Air Zone income.

That funding is dealing primarily with existing infrastructure rather than adding new capacity. The engineering workload consists of inspection, structural repair, strengthening and protection of assets that have already spent decades in service, often while adjoining roads and walking routes remain operational.

Further investigations and design work are continuing elsewhere along the New Cut to establish ground conditions and determine suitable interventions for other vulnerable sections. Construction on subsequent packages is expected to follow from 2027, so the September completions close three individual sites rather than the wider programme.

Bathurst Bridge and the two river-wall schemes show the range of interventions required within a relatively compact part of the city: steel bridge refurbishment, riverbed foundations, wall anchoring, sheet piling, highway reconstruction and environmental reinstatement. With those sites now reopened, Bristol’s next task is to convert the remaining investigation work into funded repair packages before deterioration forces further emergency closures.
