Global Sustainable Buildings Consultancy has acquired Cudd Bentley for an undisclosed sum, adding the long-established building-services engineer to its expanding group of mechanical, electrical, public-health, and sustainability consultancies. The transaction takes businesses within GSBC to more than 200 employees and collective turnover above £20 million.

Cudd Bentley was founded in 1978 and provides mechanical, electrical, sustainability, and public-health engineering services across sectors including education, healthcare, heritage, commercial, industrial, residential, and public-sector construction. The consultancy operates from offices including Sunninghill, London, and Manchester, adding both technical capacity and geographical coverage to the group.

The acquired business is expected to continue operating under the Cudd Bentley name, retaining its leadership, culture, client relationships, and existing identity. GSBC has made that approach part of its acquisition model, assembling specialist consultancies without immediately replacing their individual brands with a single trading name.

The deal follows a series of acquisitions as GSBC builds a wider engineering platform. Its existing businesses provide services across MEP design, building performance, retrofit, sustainability, commissioning, and digital engineering, allowing the group to offer a broader technical scope while individual practices continue to operate in their established markets.

The attraction of building-services engineering has increased as regulatory, energy, and operational requirements place greater demands on project design. Heating, cooling, ventilation, electrical capacity, controls, fire interfaces, energy performance, overheating, and decarbonisation are now central to both new-build and retrofit programmes, increasing the value of specialist engineering capability within multidisciplinary construction teams.

That is particularly evident in existing buildings, where services upgrades are often constrained by retained structure, occupied spaces, limited risers, outdated distribution systems, and incomplete records. Heat-pump conversion, ventilation improvement, electrical reinforcement, and control-system upgrades require detailed surveys and phasing before new equipment can be specified confidently.

Cudd Bentley’s technical scope gives GSBC additional capacity in those areas. Its work includes mechanical systems such as heating, cooling, ventilation, domestic water, district heating, heat pumps, controls, and building-management systems, alongside electrical engineering and sustainability services. Those disciplines increasingly overlap as clients seek to reduce operational energy without compromising comfort or resilience.

For the acquisition strategy to create practical value, however, group scale has to translate into project delivery rather than simply a larger combined headcount. Shared specialist resources, digital tools, recruitment, technical standards, and regional coverage can improve resilience, but poorly managed integration can introduce duplicated management and inconsistent processes.

Retaining Cudd Bentley’s brand and leadership reduces some of that disruption. Client relationships in engineering consultancy are often closely tied to individual teams and long-running project experience, so maintaining continuity can be commercially useful while group-level systems and collaboration develop around the existing practice.

The transaction also reflects the succession challenge facing established independent consultancies. Practices founded decades ago may have strong order books and technical reputations but still need a route for ownership transition, investment, recruitment, and geographic expansion. Joining a larger backed platform provides one option without requiring the consultancy to disappear immediately into a national corporate identity.

GSBC itself is comparatively new as a holding structure, making the speed of expansion notable. Passing 200 employees and £20 million in collective turnover gives the platform greater scale, but also increases the importance of consistent quality assurance and professional governance across businesses carrying different names and histories.

The next test will be whether those businesses can operate as a genuinely connected technical network on complex construction and retrofit projects. The acquisition gives GSBC more people, regional reach, and building-services expertise; its longer-term value will depend on whether those resources can be combined without losing the specialist relationships and technical independence that made Cudd Bentley an attractive acquisition in the first place.
