Equans acquires highways technology specialist Mway

Equans has acquired Mway Communications to expand highways technology capability. The £26m-turnover specialist adds operational technology, electrical engineering, communications, and highway civils to the wider group.

Equans UK & Ireland has acquired highways technology and communications specialist Mway Communications, adding around 100 employees and a business with annual turnover of approximately £26m to its UK infrastructure operations.

Mway works for National Highways and Tier 1 contractors across the Strategic Road Network, delivering technology and engineering packages associated with major roads. Its capabilities include street lighting, traffic signals, inductive loops, electrical engineering, communications infrastructure, technology installation, and associated civil works.

Managing director Stephen Crawford and relationship director Lee Day are joining Equans with the wider Mway team, maintaining management continuity following the transaction. Equans is positioning the acquisition as an extension of its existing infrastructure, engineering, energy, and digital capability.

The deal reflects the increasingly close relationship between conventional highways construction and the technology used to operate road networks. Roadside cabinets, ducts, gantries, lighting columns, power supplies, communications links, sensors, and control equipment all have physical construction requirements, but their performance depends increasingly on integrated electrical and digital systems.

That changes the way highway packages are delivered. A technology upgrade can require civil engineering, electrical installation, communications work, testing, system integration, and ongoing maintenance within the same programme, with delivery risk concentrated at the boundaries between those disciplines.

Mway gives Equans an established specialist operation already working across those interfaces. Its position on the Strategic Road Network also adds capability in operational technology, where digital systems monitor or control physical infrastructure rather than sitting separately within conventional business IT.

That distinction matters as more highway assets become connected. Traffic signals, signs, lighting, monitoring equipment, roadside communications, and other systems increasingly feed into wider network-management platforms. Their installation has to consider power resilience, communications availability, maintenance access, system compatibility, and cybersecurity alongside the physical works.

Bringing civil, electrical, and technology capability into a larger group can reduce some of the hand-offs that traditionally separate infrastructure construction from systems delivery. It does not remove the need for specialist suppliers, but it can place more responsibility for coordination within one delivery organisation.

The acquisition also gives Equans greater exposure to renewal and operational work as well as new construction. National Highways and its supply chain continue to invest in the performance, safety, and maintenance of existing assets, meaning technology upgrades and communications work can provide a significant workload even where major new road construction is more selective.

For Mway, joining Equans provides access to a larger balance sheet, broader engineering disciplines, and customers beyond the company’s established highways base. Similar combinations of civil engineering, power, communications, and operational technology are increasingly required across local transport, public infrastructure, buildings, and energy projects.

The transaction also has implications for Tier 1 contractors that have used Mway as an independent specialist. Equans has emphasised continuity in Mway’s customer relationships and management, but the business will now sit within a group that may occupy other positions in the same procurement chain.

Retaining Mway’s workforce is therefore strategically important. Highway technology requires engineers and technicians comfortable working across electrical, communications, roadside, and traffic-management environments, often within possession windows or under strict access controls. Those skills cannot simply be replaced with general construction labour.

The acquisition comes as infrastructure contractors increasingly seek greater control over technically specialised parts of project delivery. Buying a business with existing systems knowledge, customer relationships, and operational experience can be faster than attempting to build the same capability organically.

That consolidation also concentrates accountability. Where civil works, electrical installation, and operational technology sit within the same group, clients will expect fewer interface problems rather than simply a longer list of services appearing on corporate capability statements.

The commercial value of the deal has not been disclosed. Operationally, the intention is clearer: Equans is adding a specialist capable of designing, installing, and supporting the technology that increasingly determines how road infrastructure performs after the principal civil works are complete.
