Grayson sculpture champions advanced brickwork skills

A Sheffield brick sculpture combines precise geometry with traditional craftsmanship. Grayson and master bricklayer Mark Rosier created the installation to demonstrate techniques rarely accommodated on volume projects.

Grayson has commissioned a geometric brick sculpture at its Sheffield headquarters in collaboration with fifth generation master bricklayer Mark Rosier.

The construction consumables supplier initially invited Rosier to design a brick panel for the site, although the proposal developed into a free standing sculpture combining a traditional tower base with interlocking geometric forms.

Referencing Sheffield’s industrial heritage while using contemporary geometry, the design demonstrates the effects of detailed setting out, material selection, cutting, alignment, and precise control of mortar joints.

Michelmersh bricks were selected for the installation because their surface texture and tonal variation allowed Rosier to introduce subtle colour changes while forming courses that depart from the straight, repetitive arrangements used on conventional walls.

Complex setting out, non linear courses, and tightly controlled geometry run throughout the piece. Each change in angle affects the bricks above and beside it, leaving little tolerance for cumulative error as the form rises.

Rosier said the project highlights skills “at risk of being lost without deliberate investment”. Having returned to work after a life threatening illness, he continues to run educational programmes covering geometric and artistic bricklaying.

Tony Higson, managing director at Grayson, said the sculpture celebrated the relationship between craftsmanship, tools, materials, and technical knowledge. The installation will remain at the company’s headquarters as both a permanent feature and a demonstration of advanced trade skill.

Creating space for advanced trade skills

Most bricklayers spend their working lives delivering structures governed by programme, repetition, standard details, and commercial productivity. Those requirements support volume construction but provide limited opportunities to practise decorative bonds, curved work, complex junctions, or three dimensional geometry.

Skills that are rarely used can disappear even while the underlying trade remains busy. An apprentice may become highly productive on standard housing without encountering the setting out methods required for restoration, civic architecture, sculptural masonry, or intricate façade work.

The distinction between basic site competence and advanced craft capability is therefore widening. Both have commercial value, although the second requires time, mentoring, suitable projects, and access to practitioners able to explain why a detail succeeds or fails.

A geometric sculpture offers a controlled setting for that transfer of knowledge. Unlike a live façade, it can be examined closely, used as a teaching example, and developed without the same exposure to weather, access, sequencing, and programme pressure.

The techniques remain relevant beyond decorative work because accurate setting out, consistent joints, understanding of bond, tolerance management, and the ability to visualise three dimensional intersections all contribute to ordinary construction quality.

Masonry defects often arise from a breakdown in those fundamentals rather than unusually ambitious architecture. Misaligned openings, incomplete perp joints, inconsistent coursing, weak movement joint coordination, and poor interface details can lead to remedial work costing far more than careful installation.

The sector is attempting to recruit new entrants while retaining experienced workers. CITB support has helped employers take on more than 30,000 apprentices across construction, although starting an apprenticeship represents only the first stage of building a durable craft base.

Progression routes need to show that bricklaying extends beyond speed and output. Specialist masonry, restoration, conservation, façade work, training, supervision, estimating, technical advice, and business ownership can provide long careers for people who deepen their knowledge.

Manufacturers and suppliers also influence that progression because advanced work depends on detailed understanding of materials. Brick absorption, dimensions, texture, strength, colour variation, mortar selection, weather, and cutting behaviour all affect what can be constructed and how it will age.

The Grayson installation shows how traditional craft can work alongside contemporary design. Digital modelling and precise measurement can support the geometry, while the finished quality still depends on the bricklayer’s judgement, hand skills, and ability to make small adjustments during construction.

Volume building will continue to prioritise repeatability and programme certainty. Preserving advanced skills does not require every development to become ornamental, but it does require commissions, teaching projects, competitions, and specialist work that give those techniques a practical purpose.

Rosier’s sculpture turns a supplier’s headquarters into a permanent example of complex masonry. It gives a rarely used group of techniques enough visibility to be examined, taught, and reproduced rather than surviving only in historic fabric.
