Cockermouth School rebuild gains approval

Cumberland planners have approved a replacement campus for Cockermouth School. Bowmer + Kirkland is lined up for the scheme, expected to exceed £40m.

IN Brief:

  • Cumberland Council has approved a replacement campus for Cockermouth School at the Castlegate Drive site.
  • Bowmer + Kirkland is lined up to deliver the scheme, which is expected to exceed £40m.
  • The school will remain operational while new teaching, sports, and external facilities are built.

Cumberland Council planners have approved plans to replace ageing buildings at Cockermouth School with a new 137,000 sq ft campus.

The approval clears the way for demolition of existing buildings and the construction of new teaching accommodation and sports facilities at the Castlegate Drive site. Bowmer + Kirkland is lined up to deliver the project, which is expected to be worth more than £40m.

Designed to accommodate 1,440 pupils and 135 full-time staff, the redevelopment will include a main teaching building, a dedicated sports block, and the repositioning of the existing all-weather pitch to the north of the new campus. The school will remain operational while the new facilities are built alongside the existing estate.
